     RRCC supports Constitutional Amendment #1

LAPLACE— The River Region Chamber of Commerce has announced its support of Constitutional Amendment #1, as is written. The amendment will provide certainty to every homeowner either renovating or building a new home and businesses seeking to invest money and create jobs in Louisiana by ensuring they will not be targeted with new arbitrary and unexpected property tax bills.

Historically, construction projects have not been taxed while under construction. However, if the requested changes to the constitutional amendment do not pass, properties could be taxed while being constructed.
“This will be detrimental to the economy of Louisiana. If this amendment fails, any future growth to current industrial facilities or any construction of new plants will be highly questionable,” said Henry Friloux, public policy chair, River Region Chamber of Commerce.
Commercial and industrial properties as well as individual home properties will be protected from being taxed while under construction, if this amendment passes. It will clarify that construction materials will be protected from taxation until “construction is finished to the extent that the project can be used or occupied for its intended purpose.”
Constitutional Amendment #1 does not take any revenue away from local governments. Construction projects have not been taxed in the past and this amendment would prevent them from being taxed in the future. For more information, visit www.protectlataxpayers.com.
