RRCC Workforce development summit addresses local needs, collaborates efforts between agencies
LAPLACE, La.—A major milestone was reached on Monday as leaders of the River Region Chamber of Commerce met with parish government representatives, school leaders, the workforce investment board, and area community/technical colleges. Together, the group collaborated to formulate a concise set of core principles to lead and guide the Chamber’s regional effort in workforce development.
The principles are designed to enhance/educate and better prepare the citizens of our three-parish region for opportunities already available in the region. The effort will close the gap between the awareness of careers and already existing opportunities.
“We brought together the elected leadership, the K-12 educational leadership, post-secondary leadership and the business and industry on Monday. We discussed and came to a ‘meeting of the minds’ regarding these principles. We will now formulize these into a working document that will define our mission and implementation,” said Mike Palamone, Workforce Development Committee Chair, River Region Chamber of Commerce, and Principal at Urban Systems, Inc.
In addition, the Workforce Development Committee sought the expertise and insight of Louisiana Calling, a nonprofit organization whose skills, resources and strategic planning are revolutionizing workforce initiatives throughout Louisiana.
The outcome of the meeting included a set of specific goals and actions needed, including development of communication materials; bridging the gap between employers and the community; developing a defined set of best practices for workforce development; and, creating awareness.
“Louisiana Calling’s recommendations as well as the defined set of core principles will create a cascade of changes for our region and its residents,” Palamone said. “This meeting was a huge success and will undoubtedly lead to many great things as we move forward together.”Contact:Chassity McComack, Executive Director985-359-9777
